This 3-month home-based internship is an opportunity for students and recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in international development while contributing to global solutions in sustainable energy, climate policy, and knowledge management.
Background
The UNDP Sustainable Energy Hub (SEH) plays a key role in advancing a just energy transition, tackling climate challenges, and driving progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
As a Research and Knowledge Management Intern, you will:
- Conduct impactful research,
- Organize and curate knowledge resources,
- Support global communications, and
- Help make critical information accessible, structured, and actionable for UNDP teams and international partners.
You will report directly to the Director of the Sustainable Energy Hub (SEH) and work remotely, contributing to both research and digital knowledge platforms.
Internship Details
- Location: Home-based (remote)
- Duration: 3 months
- Schedule: Full-time (part-time may be considered)
- Stipend: Available for remote interns not financially supported by their university or institution (pro-rated for part-time)
- Leave: 1.5 days per month (pro-rated for part-time)
- Insurance: Interns must secure their own medical insurance (not reimbursed by UNDP)
Key Responsibilities
1. Research & Knowledge Synthesis
- Conduct literature reviews and comparative analyses on climate, energy policy, and sustainable development.
- Summarize findings from UNDP reports, country documents, and partner studies.
- Draft briefs, background papers, and talking points for senior management.
2. Knowledge Management & Data Organization
- Curate and structure knowledge products, case studies, and lessons learned.
- Maintain and update digital platforms, knowledge hubs, and intranet pages.
- Support data documentation, dashboard integration, and metadata organization.
3. Communications & Storytelling
- Draft engaging content such as policy notes, blogs, newsletters, and knowledge spotlights.
- Develop materials for presentations and global events.
- Assist with infographics, data visualization, and storytelling tools.
4. Data & Digital Management
- Organize and catalogue datasets (including geospatial and socio-economic data).
- Support data cleaning, synthesis, and visualization for knowledge products.
- Assist in building tools and dashboards for knowledge sharing.
Qualifications
Education
Currently enrolled in a Master’s or higher degree, or in the final year of a Bachelor’s degree in:
- International Development
- Sustainable Energy
- Climate Policy
- Economics, Political Science
- Environmental Studies, or related fields
- Recent graduates (within one year) may also apply.
Experience & Skills
- Strong background in research and academic/policy writing.
- Familiarity with climate action, sustainable development, or energy issues.
- Experience in knowledge management, content curation, or digital platforms is desirable.
- Data literacy (Excel, Python, R, or other tools) is an advantage.
- Excellent communication, organization, and reporting skills.
Language
- Fluency in English (oral and written) is required.
- Knowledge of another UN language (French, Spanish, Arabic, Russian, or Chinese) is a plus.
