About the University of Ghana DAAD Scholarship

The University of Ghana DAAD Scholarship provides exceptional African students the opportunity to pursue a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Seed Science and Technology at the West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI) — a world-class research and training institute dedicated to crop genetic improvement and food system transformation in Africa.

This program is offered through a partnership between the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) and WACCI, providing up to 9 scholarships — 3 In-Country and 6 In-Region — for the 2026 academic year.

The initiative supports students who aspire to become agricultural scientists, crop breeders, researchers, and lecturers, helping to build the next generation of agricultural innovators in Africa.

Eligibility Requirements for the University of Ghana DAAD Scholarship 2026

To qualify for this fully funded scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a graduate with a first academic degree (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) from a recognized university.
  • Have completed a minimum of three years of undergraduate study with above-average results (at least Second Class Upper Division or equivalent).
  • Candidates with results below Second Class Upper are not eligible.
  • Demonstrate a strong motivation for pursuing the MPhil in Seed Science and Technology.
  • Possess good knowledge of the language of instruction (English).
  • Must have completed their last degree not more than six (6) years ago at the time of application.
  • Must be a national or permanent resident of a Sub-Saharan African country.

Be one of the following:

a) A staff member of a public university,
b) A prospective academic/research staff member,
c) A public sector employee, or
d) An alumnus of the DAFI program.

Note: Applicants who have already received a DAAD Master’s scholarship are not eligible for another DAAD Master’s award.

Special Encouragement:
Female candidates, refugees with recognized refugee status, and applicants from underrepresented or disadvantaged regions are strongly encouraged to apply.

Benefits of the University of Ghana DAAD Scholarship 2026

The scholarship offers comprehensive financial and academic support, including:

  • Full tuition fees (covered annually)
  • Annual study and research allowance: €460
  • Printing allowance: One-time payment at the end of the program

Monthly stipend (for living costs such as accommodation and food):

  • €500 (PhD In-Country)
  • €550 (PhD In-Region)
  • Travel allowance: (In-Region only) – awarded twice (beginning and end of scholarship)
  • Health insurance: (In-Region only)

In addition, DAAD In-Country/In-Region scholarship holders enrolled in research-based Master’s programs are encouraged to apply for a short-term research visit to Germany for 3 to 6 months, further enhancing their academic and research experience.

How to Apply for the University of Ghana DAAD Scholarship 2026 

Interested applicants should follow the process below carefully:

Step 1: Prepare Your Application Documents

Ensure you have all required documents, including:

  • Academic transcripts and certificates
  • Proof of nationality or residency (passport/ID)
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Motivation letter (clearly stating your goals and reasons for applying)
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Proof of English proficiency (if applicable)

Step 2: Register on the DAAD Portal

  • Go to the official DAAD Scholarship Portal.
  • Create an account and register as a new user.

Step 3: Submit Your Application Online

  • Log in to the DAAD Portal.

  • Submit your application no later than November 27, 2025.

Step 4: Wait for the DAAD Review
