In a bold step toward strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare system, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has approved the establishment of the National Health Fellows Programme.
This initiative is part of the government’s broader vision to upgrade existing primary healthcare centres and construct over 8,800 new facilities across all local government areas, ensuring accessible and quality healthcare for all Nigerians.
The programme also aims to introduce new social accountability mechanisms, ensuring transparency and effectiveness in service delivery at the grassroots level.

Programme Overview
The National Health Fellows Programme will engage young, dynamic Nigerian professionals across the 774 local government areas.
Fellows will serve as change agents—driving community health initiatives, supporting primary healthcare revitalization, and strengthening accountability frameworks.
The fellowship is domiciled in the Sector-Wide Approach (SWAp) Coordination Office, under the Office of the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare.
Fellows will be recruited, trained, remunerated, and provided with the necessary tools to deliver measurable impact in the health sector.
Programme Duration
The fellowship runs for 12 months, offering participants:
- Intensive training in health systems and leadership,
- Fieldwork experience within their local communities, and
- Dedicated mentorship from industry professionals and government leaders.

Eligibility Criteria
To qualify, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Age: 25–35 years old.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences, IT, or Social Sciences.
Experience/Interest: Demonstrated interest or experience in:
- Public Health, or
- Health-related NGOs and partner organizations, or
- Community-based projects showcasing leadership and initiative.

Availability: Must be willing to participate full-time in the programme.
- State Indigene: Must be an indigene of the state being applied for.
- Digital Literacy: Must own a smartphone with active data (WhatsApp, Zoom, etc.).
- Recommendation Letter: From a University Dean, NYSC supervisor, or a respected organization attesting to character and leadership.
- Skills: Demonstrated analytical ability and entrepreneurial drive are added advantages.
