HumAngle Foundation invites applications for the Strengthening Community Journalism and Human Rights Advocacy in Northern Nigeria (SCOJA) Fellowship 2025.
The Fellowship is designed to promote accountability for human rights violations in rural communities while encouraging locally-led solutions to address pressing challenges across Northern Nigeria.
Through SCOJA, community journalists and advocates will gain practical skills to strengthen hyperlocal reporting, human rights advocacy, and stakeholder engagement.
Target Locations
We are seeking community journalists and advocates who live and work in:
Benue, Niger, Nasarawa, Plateau, Borno, Adamawa, Yobe, Kaduna, and Kano States.
Fellowship Structure
The SCOJA Fellowship will run in two phases:
- 3-day intensive training in three focal states—Kaduna, Plateau, and Borno.
- 6-month post-training engagement, during which fellows will produce impactful reports, conduct advocacy activities, and collaborate with community stakeholders.

Training Areas
The training will cover a broad range of relevant topics, including but not limited to:
- Human rights and advocacy frameworks
- Digital safety and physical security for journalists and activists
- Reporting on sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV)
- Accountability reporting and investigative journalism
- Climate change reporting and advocacy
- Conflict-sensitive journalism
- Working with CBOs, government, and development partners
- Solutions journalism and inclusive storytelling
- Data-driven reporting and civic engagement
- Mobilising and inspiring community action
- Countering misinformation and disinformation
- Press freedom and navigating legal challenges
The Ideal Candidate
Applicants should be:
- Journalists or advocates focused on community, state, or hyperlocal issues.
- Residents of one of the target states.
- Passionate about community-led change and advocacy.
- Willing to commit to 6 months of consistent engagement, including producing reports and advocacy outputs.
- Women are strongly encouraged to apply.

Expectations from Fellows
- Attend the 3-day training in one of the focal states (Kaduna, Plateau, or Borno).
- Submit monthly progress reports over a 6-month period.
- Produce at least 3 reports and 1 advocacy initiative during the Fellowship.
- Participate in surveys, virtual sessions, and data-gathering activities.
- Conduct step-down training to share acquired knowledge with colleagues.
