Call for Submission: African Union Innovating Education in Africa 2026 | $50,000 USD grant

Applications are now open for the 2026 African Union Innovating Education in Africa (IEA) initiative.

This program seeks to support transformative solutions that address key challenges in Africa’s education and training systems, including access, equity, quality, relevance, and skills alignment.

Despite progress, significant gaps remain:

  • About 20% of children (ages 6–11) are out of school
  • 33% of ages 12–14 are not in school
  • Nearly 60% of youth (15–17) are excluded from education
  • Girls are disproportionately affected
  • Shortage of qualified teachers and limited professional development
  • Mismatch between education outcomes and labour market needs

About the IEA 2026 Initiative:

Launched in 2018 by the African Union (AU), the IEA initiative aims to identify, promote, and scale impactful education innovations across the continent.

Key Achievements So Far:

  • Over 1,500 education stakeholders engaged
  • 180 innovations promoted
  • Up to USD 1 million mobilized for scaling and validation

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must be a citizen of an AU Member State
  • Lead a legally registered organization
  • Actively implementing an education innovation with proven results
  • Be directly responsible for the innovation (not intermediaries)
  • Demonstrate scalability and alignment with AU frameworks

Benefits for Successful Applicants:

  • Grants of up to USD 50,000

  • Certificate of Recognition from the AU Commissioner

  • Problem statement (100 words)
  • Innovation description (500 words)
  • Performance and impact report (500 words)
  • Contribution to digital, green, AI, or robotics ecosystems
  • Business registration and operational license documents

Note:

  • Only one innovation per organization
  • Past IEA grant recipients are not eligible
