In a renewed drive to enhance agricultural productivity and uplift rural communities, the Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled plans to support over 21,000 smallholder farmers nationwide through the FarmerMoni scheme under the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Program (GEEP).
The announcement was made by the Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu, who emphasized that the initiative aligns with the government’s broader agenda of reducing poverty and strengthening national food security.
Under this empowerment scheme, eligible farmers will gain access to micro-loans of up to ₦300,000 to expand their farming activities, purchase essential inputs, and boost crop yields. Dr. Sununu further assured that the rollout will cover all states of the federation, with detailed eligibility criteria to be released in the coming weeks.
This initiative represents another milestone in the Federal Government’s ongoing commitment to empowering grassroots entrepreneurs and farmers, providing them with the tools to thrive while contributing to Nigeria’s economic growth.
With agriculture serving as a backbone of employment and food supply, this support for smallholder farmers is expected to improve livelihoods, enhance food production, and reinforce the fight against hunger and poverty across the country.
