About ZOA Nigeria

Since 2016, ZOA has been present in Borno and Yobe States, providing life-saving support and long-term recovery solutions. We work across 10 LGAs in Borno and 3 LGAs in Yobe, reaching both Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and vulnerable host communities. Our key focus areas include Food Security & Livelihoods, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WaSH), and Education.

Your Role:

As a Community Engagement Assistant, you’ll play a vital role in strengthening relationships between ZOA and the communities we serve.

Your mission is to foster inclusive participation, build trust, and ensure that community voices are heard and respected throughout the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the planning and facilitation of Community-Based Participatory Planning (CBPP) sessions at village level.
  • Mobilize and engage diverse groups—including IDPs, host communities, women, youth, persons with disabilities, and repentant individuals—to participate in all project activities.
  • Assist in forming and revitalizing local community structures such as Peace Committees, Farmer Groups, VSLAs, and Water/Natural Resource Management Committees.
  • Conduct community sensitization sessions on project goals, selection criteria, work norms, responsibilities, and entitlements, using clear and culturally appropriate methods.
  • Coordinate and document community-led planning, feedback sessions, and sustainability discussions.
  • Ensure inclusive participation by encouraging household involvement, maintaining participation records, and promoting work norms and protection principles.
  • Collaborate with Protection, Gender, and MEAL teams to strengthen accountability, including community awareness of feedback systems and safeguarding pathways.
  • Organize local peacebuilding forums, cultural exchange events, and edutainment activities to promote social cohesion.
  • Participate in safety audits, awareness campaigns, and consultations addressing GBV, environmental protection, and inclusion.
  • Assist with data collection, beneficiary verification, and feedback gathering to inform program adjustments.
  • Prepare concise reports on community feedback, meetings, and positive outcomes in collaboration with MEAL and program teams.

Requirements:

Education & Experience:

  • Diploma or degree in Social Sciences, Community Development, Development Studies, or a related field.
  • At least 2 years of proven experience in community engagement or participatory development, preferably in humanitarian or early recovery settings.

Key Competencies:

  • Excellent facilitation and communication skills with the ability to engage women, youth, and marginalized groups.
  • Solid understanding of CBPP, local governance, and community accountability systems.
  • Ability to work with community-based structures and support safeguarding, feedback, and PSEA processes.
  • Fluency in English and local languages (e.g., Kanuri, Hausa) is essential.
  • Strong documentation, reporting, and data collection skills.

Soft Skills:

  • Flexible, culturally sensitive, and a team player.
  • Ability to work in high-pressure, sometimes insecure environments.
  • Commitment to inclusion, gender equity, and community protection.

Other Requirements:

  • Willingness to frequently travel to field locations and stay on-site to support implementation teams.
  • Must be adaptable to changing needs and field realities.
