About the Assignment

UNICEF Nigeria is seeking a Climate Change Specialist to support the integration of climate change adaptation, mitigation, resilience, research, coordination and evidence-based climate action across its programmes in Nigeria.

The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the Chief of WASH/Climate Change Lead and collaborate with government institutions, UN agencies, development partners, civil society organizations, youth-led groups and other stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the integration of climate change adaptation, mitigation and resilience into UNICEF programmes across WASH, Health, Nutrition, Education, Child Protection and Social Policy.
  • Support government and partners in implementing climate-risk-informed and child-sensitive programmes.
  • Contribute to the implementation and follow-up of UNICEF Nigeria’s Climate Landscape Analysis for Children (CLAC) Action Plan.
  • Support climate financing initiatives and policy engagement with government and development partners.
  • Coordinate climate-related meetings, workshops, consultations and communities of practice.
  • Promote meaningful participation of children, adolescents and young people in climate action.
  • Conduct research and support the development of technical briefs, case studies, knowledge products and vulnerability assessments.
  • Analyse climate-related programme data and support monitoring, reporting and evaluation activities.
  • Participate in field monitoring visits and document lessons learned, best practices and programme results.
  • Contribute to donor reports, annual reports, presentations, briefing notes and human-interest stories.

Eligibility Requirements

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Environment, Climate, Energy, Development Studies, or a related field.

Experience: Minimum 3 years of relevant professional experience, preferably in areas such as:

  • Climate change and climate financing
  • Climate policy and coordination
  • Youth engagement
  • Knowledge management
  • Research and data analysis
  • Monitoring and reporting
  • Partnership development

Additional Requirements:

  • Experience working with government institutions, UN agencies, development partners, NGOs/CSOs, youth networks or community-based organizations.
  • Strong analytical, research and documentation skills.
  • Good data analysis, monitoring and reporting capabilities.
  • Excellent communication, facilitation and partnership-building skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and work effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Fluent English is desirable.

Important Eligibility Note

The candidate must be a national of a country other than the country of assignment.

This means that because the assignment is based in Nigeria, Nigerian nationals are not eligible for this particular international UN Volunteer assignment.

Assignment Benefits

The assignment is a 12-month international UN Volunteer Specialist position, with the possibility of extension. The volunteer will be based onsite in Abuja, Nigeria, and will be responsible for arranging their own accommodation and living essentials.
