Who Can Apply? – Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the 2026 Rhodes West Africa Scholarship, you must:

1. Nationality/Citizenship

Be a citizen of one of the following countries:

Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Saint Helena, Senegal, Sierra Leone, São Tomé and Príncipe, or Togo.

2. Residency

Have lived in one or more of the countries listed above for at least five of the last ten years.

3. Age

You must meet one of the following age requirements as of October 1, 2025:

  • Standard applicants: Between 18 and 24 years old (Born between October 2, 2000 and October 1, 2007).
  • Medical, dental, law, pharmaceutical, and engineering students: Between 18 and 25 years old (Born between October 2, 1999 and October 1, 2007).
  • Late graduates (due to extended undergraduate duration): Must be under 27 years old (Born after October 1, 1998) AND must have completed their undergraduate degree on or after October 1, 2024.

4. Academic Excellence

  • You must have completed (or be on track to complete) an undergraduate degree with a First Class Honours or equivalent by the application deadline.
  • In Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy fields, a Distinction or equivalent will be accepted.

For medical students, distinction in at least three of the following five subject areas is required:

  • Medicine & Surgery
  • Pathology
  • Pharmacology
  • Gynaecology
  • Paediatrics

Note: Stronger preference is given to candidates who have pursued honors or master’s-level qualifications — especially if undertaken outside their home country — except for Nigeria and Ghana where local qualifications may suffice.

What the Scholarship Covers

The Rhodes West Africa Scholarship is fully funded and includes:

  • Oxford University tuition fees
  • Annual stipend of £19,800 (approx. £1,650/month) for living expenses
    (Note: This does not cover dependents or family members)
  • Application fee for University of Oxford
  • Visa fee and International Health Surcharge (IHS) for access to NHS healthcare
  • Two economy-class flights (to the UK and back after studies)

Required Documents

Applicants must submit:

  • Proof of Citizenship, Residency, and Age (any two of the following):
    • Certified birth certificate or sworn affidavit of birth
    • National ID card
    • Valid passport (plus translation if not in English)
    • Voter’s card
    • Notarized affidavit confirming citizenship
  • Academic transcript(s) showing grades from your university studies
  • Proof of residency in an eligible country for 5 of the last 10 years (e.g. school records)
  • Proof of English proficiency (TOEFL, IELTS, etc.)
    • Or request a waiver with a supporting letter if your degree was taught and assessed in English

All documents must be submitted in English. If originals are in another language, include certified English translations.
