About the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH)

The University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku/Ozalla, Enugu, began in the early 20th century as a general hospital established by the colonial administration to provide healthcare services to Africans.

Following Nigeria’s independence in the 1960s, the hospital continued operating as a general hospital. However, after the Nigerian Civil War in 1970, the then East Central State Government transformed it into a specialist hospital, effective from 1st July 1970.

In 1974, through Decree No. 23, the Federal Military Government took over the hospital while leaving its management under the Council of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

UNTH became an independent institution in July 1976 following the appointment of an autonomous Management Board.

Today, the hospital provides specialised healthcare services, medical training and research. It also delivers community healthcare services across several Nigerian states, particularly in the South-East geopolitical zone.

The institution aims to become a leading destination for specialised healthcare, training and research in West Africa.
