Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible, applicants must:
- Be citizens or permanent residents of a Commonwealth country (excluding South Africa).
- Intend to commence doctoral studies at UP in 2026.
- Have submitted a separate application for admission to a UP doctoral program for the 2026 academic year.
- Secure a willing academic supervisor at UP.
- Have their academic qualifications evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).
- Have completed a Master’s degree or equivalent postgraduate qualification within the past two years.
- Be under the age of 40 at the time of application.
- Not be currently enrolled in a PhD program at UP, nor have previously completed a Master’s or PhD at the university.
Selection Criteria
- Outstanding Academic Record at postgraduate level.
- Demonstrated research potential and readiness for advanced scholarly work.
- Proven leadership qualities.
- Evidence of research output (e.g., publications) at Master’s level.
- Recognition through prizes, awards, or honors.
Required Application Documents
Applicants must submit:
- Motivation letter from the UP supervisor.
- One-page outline of intended research project.
- Curriculum Vitae (max 3 pages).
- Official study leave letter (if employed).
- Copy of valid passport.
- Certified academic transcripts for all degrees.
- Two reference letters from academic supervisors familiar with the applicant’s work.
